How to Write Your Own Mystery

Hey kids!

I love receiving your letters and questions! Many of you ask me where I get my ideas for my mystery books and how I start my writing process. It seems like some of you are writing your own mysteries …. this is great!! I love inspiring kids to write stories of their own. To help get you started with your first story I even created the How to Write Your Own Real Kids Real Places Mystery starter guide!

I put together The How to Write Your Own… starter guide to give you step by step instructions on how to put together your story starting with the title page and going all the way to the glossary and scavenger hunt at the end. I talk about choosing a location for your story, coming up with your main characters, developing the plot and all the other details!

To get you started I’ll even let you test out one of the steps for free right here! Check out “The Beginning” which focuses on how to make the reader want to read your book.

Have you used the How to Write Your Own… starter guide to write your own stories? What tips did you find most helpful? How did you decide where to locate your story and who the characters would be? Let me know in the comments below! You know I always love to hear from you. And who knows… I may just run another contest this year and publish one of YOUR stories! In case you missed them, here are the stories we published for 2016 Write Your Own Mystery Contest winners!

A Beautiful Scent by Lauren Silcock
