To the races! Kentucky Derby weekend
Hi guys!
I’m so excited because it’s one of my favorite weekends of the year… Kentucky Derby weekend! The 2017 Kentucky Derby is taking place tomorrow, May 6! The Derby is the longest running sporting event in U.S. history – the first race took place on May 17, 1875. Back then the race was started by a group of friends who formed the Louisville Jockey Club. The first race included just 15 Thoroughbred horses and a crowd of 10,000 people. Now the Derby brings in crowds of more than 165,000 fans, features 20 racing horses, and has become famous for red roses and outrageous hats!
I fell in love with the Kentucky Derby a few years ago when Christina and I went to the race with Mimi and Papa. We actually had VIP passes for the event since we were friends with one of the teams! It was crazy, as soon as we arrived we were watching the practice run of Skit, our friends’ racehorse. Next thing we knew, Skit’s lead pony, Lickety-Split, was horse-napped! But we figured out that the horse-napper thought they had stolen the racehorse because they drove off with Skit’s trailer that Lickety-Split had actually just been put in. We were so scared of what would happen to poor Lickety when the horse-napper found out they had the wrong horse! Luckily we found the first clue really fast.
I know you want to find out what happens next and if we got Lickety back home safe and sound in time for the Derby, but you’ll have to read the book to find out! In the spirit of race weekend, I’ll let you read the first three chapters here though.
Make sure to watch the Kentucky Derby this weekend, and let us know your race predictions! Well, until next time... “we will sing one song for my old Kentucky home…”
Grant
