April is National Poetry Month!

Hey kids!

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? I’m sure many of you have been learning about poetry at school this month. I love poetry! Some people think that writing poems is hard, but I disagree. Actually, I have a book dedicated to helping kids get started with writing their own poetry! It’s called the Perfectly Polished Poetry Skillbuilder activity book and it contains tons of poetry writing activities. Here are some more of my ideas to get you started with your own poetry…

  1. Let’s Get Vertical: Acrostic Poems - Begin be writing your name vertically. Then think of a descriptive word or phrase that begins with each of the letters in your name!

  2. Partner Poem Writing - Do you have a friend or sibling who also wants to write their own poetry? Do this activity with them! Take turns writing one line of a poem after each other. Trade back and forth until the poem is finished. This is really challenging (and FUN) with rhyming poems!

  3. Found Poems - Does your mom or dad have any old catalogs or magazines lying around your house? Ask them if you can have them! Cut out 40-50 random phrases and words from the magazines, then arrange them into what looks and reads like a poem. Your results could be very funny!

  4. FREE Poetry Activity! - To get you started with rhyming poems, I’ll give you a freebie. Click here to download the “Rhyme Time” activity from my Perfectly Polished Poetry Skillbuilder activity book!

You all know how much I love to read your work. If you’ve written any poems, send them over to me! I can’t wait to see what you’ve written, and who knows, we might even post them here on the web site!

Happy writing,

Carole
