Materials Needed:
Red and white pipe cleaners (1 of each per candy cane)
Assorted colorful beads (approximately 20-30 per candy cane)
Scissors
Optional: ribbon for hanging
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare Your Pipe Cleaners
Take one red pipe cleaner and one white pipe cleaner. Place them side by side and gently twist them together 2-3 times at one end to secure them. This will create the classic candy cane striped effect.
Step 2: Add Your Beads
Begin sliding beads onto the twisted pipe cleaners. You can create patterns with the beads or add them randomly for a colorful effect. Leave about 1 inch of pipe cleaner free at both ends.
For younger students (K-2): Use larger beads and help them create simple patterns (like alternating colors).
For older students (3-8): Encourage more complex patterns or themes with their bead choices.
Step 3: Shape Your Candy Cane
Once all beads are added, carefully bend the beaded pipe cleaners into a candy cane shape (like the letter "J"). Make sure to bend slowly so the beads stay in place.
Step 4: Secure the Ends
Twist the remaining ends of the pipe cleaners together to secure all the beads in place. Trim any excess pipe cleaner with scissors.
Step 5: Create a Hanger (Optional)
For a hanging ornament, create a small loop at the top of the candy cane using a small piece of extra pipe cleaner, or tie a short piece of ribbon through the top of the candy cane.
Extension Ideas:
Create a family of different-sized candy canes
Use green and red beads for a traditional Christmas look
Make mini versions to use as gift tags
Challenge older students to create other holiday shapes like stars or trees
Classroom Tip:
Set up a "creation station" with sorted beads in small containers. Have students plan their design on paper before selecting beads to minimize spills and encourage thoughtful designs.
