Happy March, CMBC members! Saint Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and we wish you plenty of good luck and fortune. To kick it off, here are two fun activities for you and your family and friends to enjoy! Don’t be shy—follow the rainbow!
Paper Bowl Leprechaun
Did you know leprechauns are only 2-3 feet tall and are elves from Irish folklore? It is said that they reside in hollow tree trunks to hide from humans. It is almost impossible to catch a leprechaun due to how sneaky they are… But don't worry—we can create our own using arts and crafts!
What You Need:
Paper bowl
Orange acrylic paint
Peach acrylic paint
Sponge paint brush
Googly eyes
Markers
Orange, green, black, and gold/yellow construction paper
Scissors
Glue
Stapler
Shamrock stickers or beads (optional)
Directions:
1. Paint the bottom of the paper bowl with peach acrylic paint, then paint the outside rim with orange paint.
2. Once the paper bowl has dried, place googly eyes on top of the paper bowl. Draw a smile, nose, and freckles using your markers.
3. Tear or cut out two small pieces of orange construction paper to resemble eyebrows and glue them above the googly eyes.
4. Trace a leprechaun hat on the green construction paper, a black strip on the black construction paper, and a buckle on the gold/yellow construction paper.
5. Cut out all the pieces and glue the black strip and buckle onto the hat.
6. Staple the hat on top of the paper bowl.
7. Add any special beads, stickers, shamrocks, glitter, or other fun details!
Treasure Pots
Leprechauns are known for being the cobblers of the fairy world. They are shoemakers, which is how they earn their gold and hide it in pots at the end of the rainbow. Let’s create our own pots of treasure! This activity is perfect to do with your family or in a group.
What You Need:
Black and yellow construction paper
Scissors
Glue
Pen
White crayon or chalk
Directions:
1. Trace the shape of a pot onto black construction paper and cut it out.
2. Trace circles onto yellow construction paper and cut them out.
3. Write on each yellow circle or “gold coin” a “treasure in your life.” This can be anything you appreciate, love, or feel happy about, like friends, pets, family, etc.
4. Glue the coins to the top of the pot.
5. Write your name on the pot using a white crayon/chalk.
