Make "Haunted" Halloween Treats

Halloween (October 31) is just around the corner, so it's almost time for costumes, candy, and crazy fun! What will you dress up as to go trick-or-treating? How about a character from The Mystery of the Haunted Library series? For even more fun, you and your friends can have a book party with themed treats from the mysteries!

Coconut's "Kibble"

Coconut needs her kibble to fuel her adventures with Mimi and the kids from Spanish Moss School! Here's a "people version" that you can make! (Note: this is not safe for dogs to consume.)

What You'll Need:

  • Corn or wheat square cereal (like Chex)

  • Mini marshmallows

  • Chocolate round cereal (like Cocoa Puffs)

  • Clean, new dog bowl (a regular bowl works, too)

Directions:

  1. Pour 1 cup of wheat or corn square cereal into the bowl.

  2. Pour 1 cup of chocolate round cereal into the bowl.

  3. Pour 1/2 cup of mini marshmallows into the bowl.

  4. Stir to combine everything in the bowl.

Special thanks to Surviving a Teacher's Salary blog for this great idea!

Jar of "Red Herrings"

In The Trembling Tower Library of Timbuktu, Mimi receives a mysterious jar of red herrings as a warning not to go on her adventure to Timbuktu. You can create your own jar with gelatin and candy fish!

What You'll Need:

  • A clear glass jar with a lid

  • 1 box of blue instant gelatin (like Jell-O)

  • Red gummy candy fish (like Swedish Fish)

  • Boiled water

  • Cold water

  • Spoon

  • Glass dish

Directions:

  1. Follow the directions on the box to prepare the gelatin in a glass dish. Ask a parent or guardian to help you make the gelatin and boil the water for you. Refrigerate the prepared gelatin for four hours.

  2. Once the gelatin has set, remove it from the fridge and spoon a layer of gelatin into the glass jar.

  3. Add a couple of candy fish to the jar.

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 and continue layering the gelatin and fish until the jar is full. Add a few more candy fish to the top. (Tip: You can push the fish into the gelatin to make it look like they're swimming.) Close the lid when you're done.
