Did you know that on August 21, 1959, Hawaii was the 50th state added to the United States?
Hawaii is world-famous for its beautiful beaches. Residents and visitors can surf, swim, canoe, hike, water-ski, or spearfish at many different locations, on each of the islands!
Who lived in Hawaii first? Native Hawaiians did! They are called Polynesians. They moved around to find food and hunted in Hawaii’s woods. They fished in Hawaii’s oceans and gathered fruits and seeds and nuts.
The first explorers came to Hawaii in 1778. They came from the country of England. James Cook was their leader. He and his men were looking for new land!
Before Hawaii became a state, it was a kingdom. Native Hawaiians chose kings and queens to rule them. Some kings and queens lived in the Iolani Palace. You can visit the beautiful palace in Honolulu today!
Here's a fun fact: Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States of America and he was born in Hawaii! Barack Obama grew up in Honolulu with his mother and grandparents
Hawaii’s nickname is “The Aloha State.” Aloha is a Hawaiian word that means hello and goodbye!
