Thanksgiving is coming soon (November 28), and what Thanksgiving meal is complete without side dishes and desserts? Craft your own version of pie and corn out of just a few "ingredients"—aka, arts and crafts supplies! This paper plate pie and pipe-cleaner corn are "gourd" activities for your family to make together as decorations for your Thanksgiving table.
Paper Plate Pie
What You'll Need:
Paper plates (3 paper plates for each pie that you make)
Tan, brown, red (for a cherry pie), orange (for a pumpkin pie), and green (for a Granny Smith apple pie) paint
Brown construction paper
Scissors
Glue stick
Cotton balls or white pom-poms
Paper towels
Paintbrushes
Cup of water
Directions:
Lay a paper towel down because this activity can be messy! Squeeze your paint onto a paper plate (this will be your paint palette).
To make the "filling" for your pie, paint an entire paper plate red for cherry, orange for pumpkin, or green for apple. Set it aside to dry when done painting. To make the "pie crust," paint one plate tan and another plate brown. Set aside these plates to dry.
After all of the plates have dried, take your "pie filling" plate and trim off the edge of the plate. You'll want to cut about a half-inch away from the edge.
Glue the "filling" plate on top of your tan "pie crust" plate. Cut the tan plate to make a scalloped edge around the middle plate to resemble a scalloped pie crust.
Glue the two plates on top of your brown plate.
Cut 4 one-inch-wide strips of brown construction paper. Glue them on top of the "pie" in a tic-tac-toe pattern.
Glue cotton balls or white pom poms in the center of the "pie" to make it look like whipped topping. Voila! You have a picture-perfect pie!

Pipe Cleaner Corn
What You'll Need:
5 brown pipe cleaners
Red, yellow, white, orange, and black plastic beads
Wire cutters
Directions:
Place one pipe cleaner horizontally on the table. Take a second pipe cleaner and lay it vertically on top of the first pipe cleaner in the center; it should look like a plus sign. Twist the vertical pipe cleaner around the center of the horizontal pipe cleaner. Lay a third pipe cleaner on top, going diagonally. Twist it around the center. Repeat with two more pipe cleaners.
Slide beads onto each pipe cleaner. It doesn't matter what order the colors are in, so have fun and make your own pattern!
Gather the pipe cleaners together and twist the tops of the pipe cleaners. Ask an adult to trim the tips of the pipe cleaners with wire cutters.
